Program Year 2024-2025:  Tiny Creative Habits:  Celebrating Life in the Everyday

Gallery Takeover is a series of annual exhibitions that display the resulting works created through art-making programs designed and led by Front Porch Gallery teaching artists and educators, both onsite and offsite in our partner organizations. This interactive program serves as a platform for every participant, regardless of their age or abilities, to create, share, and connect through art.  Gallery Takeover program is an extension of our commitment to accessibility and celebrating aging, with a focus on intergenerational exchange, social connections and personal growth. This program aims to provide an inclusive platform that represents the diverse voices of our communities and challenges assumptions about age and disability.

Gallery Takeover program places access and belonging at the heart of its agenda. Central to Front Porch Gallery’s mission is our commitment to ensure access to our programs, exhibitions, and resources, to the widest possible audience, and broaden our reach to communities and organizations who lack equitable access to supportive creative opportunities.

Uncover the profound impact of small changes on a path to fulfillment. Discover how investing in tiny habits of creativity can enrich our lives and lead to significant transformation. Explore the magic that occurs when ordinary moments are ignited with creative sparks. This curriculum is part of Gallery Takeover, an annual collaborative project. Throughout the year, Ruth’s TableFront Porch Gallery and Creative Spark work with partners to implement meaningful, arts-based workshops that culminate in a community-led exhibit. This interactive program serves as a platform for every participant, regardless of their age or abilities, to create, share and connect through art.

This program is brought to you by Front Porch a dynamic not-for-profit organization, dedicated to empowering individuals to live connected and fulfilled lives through community and innovation.

Gallery Take Over: Tiny Creative Habits Virtual Gallery

Diorama of Aspirations
Cardboard boxes, magazines, colored paper

Participants: Beacons, Paper Craft Cafe, Carlsbad Senior Center, Phoenix Group, Artist Katheryn Peterson, Artist LE Gillen

Participants:  Surfing Madonna, National Charity League, Doris Bertch, Katheryn Peterson
Creative Cartography
Paper grocery bags, markers, pencil, oil pastels

Shape Your Intuition
Bristol, colored paper circles, glue, markers, pencil
Trusting our intuition can come from bringing the Tiny Habit of play into our lives. This collage exercise encouraged participants to go with their gut and have fun. The act of drawing simple patterns onto shapes can become a tiny, self-care habit that quiets our minds and encourages us to play and get in touch with our inner voice.
Participants:  Beacons, Paper Craft Cafe, Doris Bertch
Gratitude Feathers
Paper feathers, markers, water
Acknowledging what we’re thankful for feels good, is good for us, and can help us feel more connected to our communities. For this collaborative project, we constructed a large flow of feathers in flight to symbolize how our collective gratitude can uplift and carry us as a community. Together we soar!
Participants: Beacons, Paper Craft Cafe, Girls Scouts, Katheryn Peterson, Doris Bertch, JoLind Echstein
Collage Birds Project

Woven Collage Project

Participants: Mentors Exhibit Artists
As part of the Mentors Exhibit, paired artists participated in a woven collage project designed to foster connection and creativity. This initial collaboration provided a chance for the artists to get to know one another and explore their unique styles before embarking on a larger joint artwork. The project offered a delightful and intimate experience, sparking creativity, camaraderie, and mutual understanding. The result was not only a collection of beautifully woven collages but also an atmosphere filled with fun, laughter, and the foundation for lasting friendships.

Advanced Style Fashion Show
Hand-made, vintage, and unique personal collection pieces
Facilitated by Judy Berberian All Photos by Robin Barrett
This event aims to showcase the creativity and talent of our community, and to embrace the spirit of the advanced style trend that began in New York City about 20 years ago. This movement celebrates the fashion and creativity of older adults, redefining aging through bold and stylish self-expression. We want to embody this spirit, demonstrating that creativity knows no age limits and that fashion can be a powerful form of art and personal expression at any stage of life.
